  1. So what do you guys think about this eGPU? What do you think about eGPUs in general? I'm pretty impressed by how seamless Apple has made the process. 👍🏽 If you liked this video. ☺️

  3. I believe the convenience of using this eGPU effortlessly with Thunderbolt 3 monitors shouldn't be underestimated. I can't tell you how many online discussions have focused on how to work around using eGPUs with monitors that have Thunderbolt 3 inputs, such as some LG 4K monitors and the LG 5K monitor. Time is money. Workaround hardware costs money. Workarounds that don't work cause stress. I do agree with other comments. There are better graphics cards than the Radeon Pro 580. I mean, there is ALWAYS something better. But it is a workstation (as opposed to desktop) quality graphics card with higher quality components. This probably doesn't matter to most folks. But, for those who use their computers for many hours per day, it is a plus for this unit. Bottom line, and as Jeff said, this eGPU is not for everyone. But you can makes the case that it can be the eGPU of choice for a select group of users. The fact that it is backordered for up to 10 weeks on the Apple store seems to imply that there is still string appeal for this unit with customers.

  5. What I never understand is why an egpu is so expensive? It’s like $700 for a box with ok graphics, I can legit buy a gaming laptop with much better graphics for a much better price. I get it, if it has integrated graphics, the price makes sense, but if there’s no integrated graphics, why would it be $700

  6. Not upgradable? How do you upgrade a video card? You buy a new one and replace it. How do you upgrade a Blackmagic eGPU? You buy a new one and replace it. You can sell the old one just the used market just like you do with the graphics card.

  7. it looks like an exceptional product! but unless black-magic gives us an upgrade option or a trade off its not worth it . and it would be stupid for them not to do so ? cause its a great way for them to market their software and product for content creators and gamer's .

  10. Thanks for the review I have carried out sone research on these with a view to using one on my 2018 Mac mini whilst making my decision to get one my main considerations were, an outgoing thunderbolt 3 port for the lg 5 k monitor, the unit is also a docking station with USB ports and runs without excessive fan noise. I have no interest in gaming just want decent performance on a 5k monitor. I don’t like the units with an upgrade option as they all have fan noise and a larger footprint, I can’t find one with a thunderbolt output, also by the time you are thinking of upgrades better and more up to date boxes are usually available anyway.

  11. Yes, FCPX not (as yet) taking full advantage of the eGPU was a BIG disappointment… particularly since there has been no announcement to date (?) as to a fix???

The whole point was to minimize the upcoming impact of processing 4K ProRes RAW once Nikon and Atomos deliver the firmware to support their Z6 and Ninja V, respectively…

  12. First of all, amazing review. Your videos are top notch and I appreciate all of your hard work. With that being said, did I really just hear that this Blackmagic doesn’t work when using Final Cut Pro? Seriously? I am currently a 2018 13 inch MacBook Pro user and in love with the size (highest specs). Don’t want to go with the 15 inch simply because it is too big for travel and cumbersome. So I wanted to keep the 13 inch MacBook Pro and get a separate EGPU. If it doesn’t work in Final Cut Pro, there is simply no point and that is extremely disappointing.

  13. The only thing holding me back from buying an LG Ultrafine 5K is that I can't plug in any HDMI sources into it. Since the Blackmagic has an HDMI in, would it be possible to plug an HDMI source into (gaming console) and display it on the ultrafine without too much lag?

  15. My personal experience update: 2018 new Mac mini not only works with Blackmagic egpu, also bootcamp too, I didn't do anything, just connect to thunderbolt 3, output to HDMI display, reboot to bootcamp, it just worked. Only issue, when startingup, the Option key won't work, but command+R still do.
